Introduction
As you may remember, -not long ago-, the Yellow Pages was a printed directory that listed businesses and professional services, traditionally found in a separate, yellow-paged section of a traditional telephone book.
Before: There was one Yellow Pages book for each city/town or metro area in the USA. These phone books were also available in the entire world, offered by different companies. Some towns/areas with a small population did not have a phone book nor a Yellow Pages at all.
Today: We do not see printed phone books in the USA anymore; however, thanks to the Internet, online business directories exists mainly as small, scattered, irregular, mostly incomplete online/digital platforms and apps everywhere on the Internet, but the core function remains—to help people find businesses by name/category and location, often with advertisements.
The name “Yellow Pages” comes from the yellow paper traditionally used for business-listings-only, contrasting with the white pages for residential numbers.
What it was (traditionally)
- A physical white phone book with a specific section for businesses printed in yellow pages. One book per city/town or metro area.
- Businesses were listed alphabetically within categories, such as “plumbers” or “restaurants”. The “White Pages” contained residential listings, while the “Yellow Pages” had business listings.
What it is now (digitally)
- An online platform and/or mobile app that lists local, metro area, regional/county, state or national businesses.
- Includes more detailed information than the old books, like days/hours of operation, contact information, emails, websites, descriptions, tags, categories, social media, audio, video and reviews. Not all platforms or mobile apps provide the same specific pieces of information for every business.
- Many different online directories exist, including specialized ones for specific niches ex: Lawyers, Contractors, Health, etc.. Each offering business data in different ways.
How it is used
- For consumers: To find businesses and services, compare options, and get contact information.
- For businesses: To advertise to potential customers. Businesses can pay for listings and advertise, similar to the old model, and can also manage their online presence through these platforms.

Our DAPROSE Smart Business Directory, (DSBD), hosted at http://dsbd.us, is a USA business directory platform owned, offered, managed and operated by DAPROSE (Data Processing Service) (https://daprose.com), A data processing and software development company in Houston, Texas, USA.
We do not have all the businesses out there in the USA as yet, but we have the most: Our DSBD-database covers the entire USA geographical area (50 states). Our current database record count is over 20.1 million businesses.
Both, the DSBD-Database and the DSBD-Portal (computer programs that make up the Graphical User Interface, GUI), can easily accommodate any number of additional countries. (One separate installation per country is required. A fee is also required for the source code files. Please contact us if you want to obtain the source files and the SQL scripts to do your own installation. US Data is sold separately.)
Special algorithms (computer programs) are required to export any dataset to a complete flat/txt/csv table. This service is offered to any customer interested in any specific data.

As of today, (Nov 2025), we are close to 34 million businesses in the U.S., but the exact number depends on the criteria used for counting.
A frequently cited statistic of 6.1 million is for businesses with at least one paid employee, while the total including sole proprietorships with no employees is over 34 million.
Total businesses: Over 34 million (including those with no employees).
Employer firms: 6.1 million businesses with at least one paid employee.
Breakdown by size:
(99.9%) of all businesses are considered small businesses.
(99.7%) of employer firms have fewer than 100 employees.
Our DSBD is a SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) list of about 20.1 million businesses in the USA, you can access any business using our GUI, or buy any list from our Mailing List Distribution System.
